'Alpha Concept Shell'

This is a design sketch for a mecha concept matrix (design system) book that I'm writing and illustrating in order to help new and veteran mecha and weapons designers. By presenting a step by step system with the aim of helping them in the creation and illustration process.

This step of the design process would be the alpha concept shell. The shell allows the designer to properly pose the mecha, know where to apply perspective, and aid in placing the cast and props of the scene in the correct places.

Alpha shells utilize general shapes to identify arms, legs, etc. These shells can be carved, so to speak, and allow the mecha designer to shape the aesthetic look of the mecha body.
